Handwoven 4-Coppers Throw
The 4 Coppers cotton throw meticulously woven on a pedal loom by the family of Arturo Hernandez in Mitla Oaxaca. For the Kwakwaka'wakw, and other people's of the Pacific Northwest potlatch culture, the copper is the symbol of a Hereditary Chief's wealth, power, and influence. Copper's are named and retained in family/clan for carrying on through generations forever. A Copper is a symbolic and literal shield that is used in Kwakwa̱ka̱'wakw First Nations culture to communicate Kwakwa̱ka̱'wakw standing and order, responsibilities, and the accumulated wealth associated with a chief and their family.
